Friday Nights are for Korean BBQ
A couple of years ago, a friend made me drive to this particular eatery so that he could pick up his take-away. At the time, I didn’t know about the wonders of Korean food and naturally looked at him with a disturbed expression on my face. Fast-forward a year later, this friend had since moved to Dubai and on one of those rare trips I make to Dubai for pleasure, he decided to take us to another Korean BBQ restaurant and introduce me to Korean cuisine. It was instant pyaar (aka love). The meat was perfectly cooked, so succulent and yummy, I was hooked.
But I digress.
Since then, I’ve been wanting to go back to this eatery so that I don’t have to drive all the way to Dubai for Korean food.
Cut to a Friday night where another friend and I were deciding whether we should go out to eat. There was an internal debate going on for me. My choices were having McDonalds delivered (yes, in the UAE, McDonalds now delivers to your home!) or I could go out, be sociable and pretend I wasn’t a without something to do on a Friday night. So, the conditions for going out developed:
- somewhere not too far from home (15 minute radius).
- somewhere I wouldn’t have to be dressed in my Sunday best.
- somewhere that I hadn’t been before.
Almost instantaneously, Manna Land came to mind.
45 minutes later, we were at the restaurant and there was really no need to even look at the menu. She and I both knew what we wanted. Two servings of Yachae Bulgogi – thinly sliced beef in a special marinated sauce. It is served with white rice, kimchi and spiced tofu and a variety of other seasoned vegetable dishes. One of the things I find novel about Korean BBQ is that you can cook the food at your table. I have to point out that my parents think I am the biggest fool around paying money to make my own food at a restaurant when I refuse to step foot in the kitchen at home.
Back to the food.
The meat was just the right texture and quite soft. The restaurant has recently had a refurbishment, so it has had an upgrade. I was almost tempted to order another serving once I was done, but fortunately I came to my senses and stopped.
I will definitely be going back again.
