I first visited No. FiftySeven Boutique Cafe when it had opened a few years ago, and hadn’t been back. A couple of months ago, No. 57 had a food truck at the Abu Dhabi Food Festival and having sampled one of their signature desserts known as “Ermaghgerd” at the Abu Dhabi Festival, I had been wanting to go back. I mean, the name alone of that dessert was enough to get me to go back.
Cue, this weekend. My friend and I happened to be free on a Saturday morning and we arranged to catch up over brunch at No. 57. The restaurant is located in Al Marasy, which is a little known marina in Al Bateen that not many people know about. Yey! It meant that we were sure to get a table, unlike in other cities where one would have to reserve a table in advance or queue for 30 minutes.
Taking advantage of the nice weather, we chose to sit outside. When we were handed the menu, my eyes were immediately drawn to the dessert section, because, why not? But I did require some sustenance, and sugar would not completely satisfy the hunger pangs. I stuck to my breakfast favourite, poached eggs on avocado toast with a side of french fries (everyone needs to indulge now and again) and my brunch companion had her favourite, eggs benedict. The eggs were well cooked and the beef bacon was just the right amount of grease. To wet the palette, I had the pineapple and passion fruit juice which is one No. 57’s signature drinks.
After breakfast, came what in my opinion was the main course – dessert. The description of this sweet concoction alone is sufficient to leave you wanting more. Toffe crumble, cream and roasted marshmallows packaged into a lovely little bell jar. Ideally, have this with a scoop of gelato or ice cream to balance the sweetness.
